Danny Ivan’s work is gorgeously colourful; multiple warm hues overlaid with soft textures. While much of his work has geometry and digital glitch as its basis, he also demonstrates some fabulous drawing skills, especially with his illustrations of animals – rich and wild and gentle, all at the same time.

Surprisingly, at one time Danny hated computers. Originally working as a freelance graphic designer in Madeira Island (a popular tourist resort, part of a small archipelago off the coast of Portugal), he became disenchanted with the work he was doing – regular work for the same clients designing logos, posters and flyers – and so he returned to university to study Advertising and Marketing. While he was there however, the Audiovisual and Multimedia course soon caught his eye and he swapped.

Danny has been playing around in Photoshop and Illustrator since he was 15 (starting with PS 5.5!). However, his current work most often begins as a pencil sketch in his diary. He adores colour, and uses gloriously bold hues to convey happiness and excitement within his work.  Movement is another one of his fascinations and he says one of his favourite digital tools is the warp tool in Illustrator.

Now making his home in Lisbon, his work is becoming quite well known, with numerous exhibitions and startup projects under his belt. However, he told me the best thing that has happened to him recently is being asked by fab.com to design a range of iPhone cases – 49 of them in fact (!) due for release at the end of August.

Danny describes himself as reserved, and doesn’t publish a great deal of information about himself on any of the sites selling his work. Despite this, he still finds himself crowded with technology and information and to counterbalance it all he pursues a simple life. A quiet space with a sunset is his ideal – tranquil and inspiring.

His very best piece of advice comes with a warning about putting in the effort. Even though he thinks it can be “the hardest thing in life to make dreams come true because everybody has a lot of excellent ideas,” he encourages you to get out there and “Make it happen.”
