Under the sea. It’s entirely another world, and it has captured artists’ imaginations for centuries. Hope you enjoy these picks from around the interwebs.

christinageorgephoto – jellyfish

I know I’m not the only one fascinated with these creatures, lumpy and elegant in equal parts. I’m not quite sure how joyful these particular creatures are, lacking as they do in any kind of centralised nervous system, but I like to imagine these ones swooping and playing like baby fish.

wren_leyland – giant kraken

Oh the Kraken! I love the stories surrounding its mystique, stories upon stories upon stories, each monstrous and horrifying detail of its wrath magnified in the retelling. This surface designer has several designs featuring this wondrous creature in her Spoonflower shop.

erintyner – starfish no.2a

Erin’s done a series of work on marine life, featuring similarly bold and stark compositions, but you might remember I featured her miniature dioramas a little while ago here.

heyamyjo – corazon de la oceana (linocut)

I do love a good linocut – they have great guts, but are equally capable of wonderful subtlety.

melinda young (via fingers.co.nz) – ‘drop pom’ neckpiece. coral, pearl, mother-of-pearl, artificial flower

Melinda Young is an established jeweller from New Zealand who utilises a lot of artificial flower parts in her work, with astonishing results. You should definitely check out some more of her pieces here.

sevenelevenstudios – jellyfish – manipulated vintage image

Oh yes, I love jellies. That is all.
