Dorte Dietrich is a jeweller living in Leipzig, Germany.

She is rather fond of plants! She says her work is especially informed by “the inner life of plants with their different structures and textures”. She is constantly collecting, drying, processing, sketching and photographing them to provide the foundation ideas for her jewellery.

What is also particular to Dorte’s style is the elegant small scale of her jewellery, its emphasis on folded forms and simplistic details. There is a great deal of control in her forms, and there are no  extraneous details. Still, there is also a wonderful softness and gentleness to these forms, they are feminine, and not at all harsh. She achieves this through those gorgeously soft curving lines, and a muted, pearly finish on the silver.

Dorte’s enamelled sculptural pieces are very different to her jewellery. They are wildly brighter in  colour, less measured, and more complex in shape. This approach is absolutely deliberate; there is still very much a sense of a maker in control of the materials. There is no denying the overall form is still the result of close study of the original plants, and great technical skill is required to enamel both sides of one piece of metal. I love these pieces, they have great vibrancy and life as a result of this much looser approach.
